We’ve designed every aspect of the Toyota Mirai to be as innovative, efficient and reliable as our fuel cell technology.
When you pump hydrogen into the vehicle, the gas travels to a carbon-fiber reinforced fuel tanks where it's stored.
The FCV’s front intake grills deliver the outside air to the fuel cell stack.
Hydrogen travels from the tanks to the fuel cell stack. There, it goes through a chemical reaction involving the oxygen in the air, creating electricity to power the vehicle.
When you put your foot on the gas pedal, electricity from the fuel cell stack is sent to the motor.
In the end, the only by-product of creating electricity with hydrogen and oxygen in our fuel cell stack is water, which leaves through the tailpipe.
Safety was a primary objective when engineering the Mirai. Our proprietary safety system is based on four fundamental principles:
Every material selected is used to contain hydrogen safely.
To prevent hydrogen from traveling to potentially damaged systems outside of the tank, the system automatically shuts the tank’s hydrogen output valve.
All hydrogen-related parts are located outside the cabin and designed to help ensure leaked hydrogen doesn’t build up.
Since the gas is lighter than air, it rapidly disperses, reducing the time window to cause damage in the event of an ignition.
A vehicle as groundbreaking and revolutionary as the hydrogen-fueled Toyota Mirai demands equaly groundbreaking and revolutionary safety technology. Case in point, our multi-patented, carbon-fiber-wrapped, polymer-lined tanks are built in a three-layer structure and absorb five times the crash energy of steel.

Over the years, Mirai prototypes have undergone millions of miles of road and track evaluation, rigorous in-house crash testing and more than 10,000 miles of extreme climate testing, helping ensure the same world-class safety you’ll find in any Toyota vehicle.
Mirai features a unique frame designed to distribute crash forces efficiently. In the event of a collision, the impact force is distributed around the passenger cabin and the Toyota Fuel Cell Stack and hydrogen tanks, reducing body deformation and helping to reduce the chance of injury. The collapsible steering column also helps protect the driver by absorbing force during impact.
The Mirai is equipped with Toyota’s Star Safety System, which is a suite of safety systems for braking, stability and traction control. These include Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (E-VSC),1 Traction Control (TRAC), 4-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA)2 and Smart Stop Technology® (SST).3
This system helps keep the road safe with a millimeter-wave radar that detects a vehicle ahead or obstacles, etc. on the same route. It provides an audible warning and a display notification to alert you of a possible collision under certain circumstances. When you depress the brake pedal after an alert, PCS powerfully assists braking power. Even if you don’t react, automatic braking and collision-avoidance support will help prevent a collision. For example, if the vehicle ahead is traveling at 20 mph and Mirai is traveling at 50 mph Mirai will decelerate by up to 30 mph to prevent a collision or reduce collision damage.
With available Safety Connect®, emergency assistance is within your reach. Via Toyota’s 24/7 call center, Safety Connect® offers subscribers helpful features such as Emergency Roadside Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Locator, Roadside Assistance and Automatic Collision Notification.32
Toyota cares about your privacy, the security of your vehicle data and the security of your personal information.
A camera uses visible lane lines to determine if the vehicle veers out of its lane without signaling a turn, and alerts the driver with a buzzer or a display notification.7
The cabin is equipped with a driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System, front seat-mounted side airbags for the driver and front passenger, front and rear side curtain airbags, plus driver knee and front passenger seat-cushion airbags. They’re all part of a system designed to help keep you safe.8

The PCU decides when to use stored energy from the battery or to draw energy directly from the fuel cell stack. This is part of what makes the Mirai so energy efficient, and is based on the Toyota hybrid PCU found in the Prius.
For the electric motor, we chose an existing motor from one of our Lexus hybrid vehicles, providing a history of reliability and reducing overall cost.
Our four-phase boost converter brings voltage to 650 volts. Driving at a higher voltage makes more efficient use of the motor, matching the Mirai’s power output to Toyota’s other hybrids. This is a key factor in allowing Toyota to use the battery, PCU and motor from other Toyota and Lexus vehicles.
The stack generates power by combining hydrogen with oxygen from the outside air. Currently, Toyota leads the industry in this technology, achieving the highest power output while dramatically reducing the system’s price and size from its previous fuel cell vehicles.
All of our hydrogen tanks are produced in-house and specially designed for the Mirai. Toyota’s origins as a loom-weaving business helped our engineers design the carbon fiber weaving on our tanks, significantly reducing production time and improving the weight-to-storage ratio.
The battery allows for regenerative braking and also assists during high power demands like accelerating, improving total system efficiency and fuel economy. Like the motor, the battery is an existing design from one of our Toyota hybrid vehicles, which provides a proven design and reliability.
